SHORT STORY REVIEW: FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT
Title: First Star I See Tonight
Writer: Andrew Leon Hudson, adapted by Nicola Prentis
“The First Star I See Tonight” is a short story about Dr. Tomas Streyer, a scientist who was blamed by everyone because the stars had disappeared after his experiment with his team. All the people in his country weren’t happy and they tried to make him go to the International Criminal Court. They charged him with stealing the stars. Dr. Tomas tried to explain what exactly had happened, but they did not believe him. He had the intention to prove what he thought about the stars, but it took a long time, and he knew that people didn’t want to hear anything. In the end, Dr. Tomas gives up and says that he is guilty.
Dr. Tomas was sent to work at the Extremely Large Telescope in Paranal in Chile as a punishment, and in that place, he saw the first star after disappearing in almost nine years.
In this story, we know that Dr. Tomas is a patient person, he accepts the punishment from people and he patiently waits until he can see the first star. When he was blamed by the people, he had an opportunity to explain in more detail what happened, it may have helped him to avoid punishment if the people understood him, he should have done this, but unfortunately, he didn’t.
